Sensitivity of algebraic Riccati equations

Results are presented giving upper and lower bounds on the condition number of the algebraic Riccati equation (ARE). The sensitivity of the solution to the ARE with respect to perturbations in the coefficient matrices is shown to correspond directly to the optimal control closed-loop dynamics. In particular, well damped closed-loop systems are naturally linked to well-conditioned Riccati problems.
