Abstract
An analysis of the mechanical behavior of the C-shaped compliant section is presented. The classical analytic solutions for elastic, thin, nearly complete rings are first extended to cover incomplete rings and cylinders. Then, a novel numerical technique which uses the finite element method to solve for the compliant section force-deflection relation is described. This procedure is validated by comparison with the analytic solutions and is extended to rings that are thick and tapered, and that are made of elastic-plastic materials
