Abstract :
An extremely compact PIN optical receiver with a GaAs IC chip set (a preamplifier IC, a main amplifier IC, and an ECL buffer IC) has been developed. The unique on-chip variable transimpedance circuit of the preamplifier IC can prevent overload on a simultaneous basis without compromise of the low noise characteristic. The main amplifier IC and the ECL (emitter coupled logic) buffer IC made a substantial contribution to the realization of a simple and high-performance receiver circuit. This receiver module within a small package (26 mm×12.7 mm×6 mm) demonstrated a low power consumption of 600 mW and a high sensitivity of -30.2 dBm at 622.08 Mb/s. Dramatic improvement of dynamic range (at least 30.2 dB) was also verified
