  • Abstract
Electric vehicles (EVs) offer the possibility of electrical energy storage within the power grid on low voltage level. By means of controlled off-peak charging of the EVs´ batteries, it is thus possible to cover the power demand of several million EVs without the need for additional power plant capacities. In effect, electricity can thus be supplied at a very cost-effective rate. A simulation of Germany´s power plant mix provides a breakdown of each power plant´s deployment pattern, including all costs for specifically charging EVs. Additional electricity feed-in from renewable energy sources, however, plays a negligible role in the charging mix of EVs. A genuine zero emission integration of Germany´s EV fleet is termed possible by capping all additional CO2 emissions resulting from EVs. A considerable price hike for CO2 emission credits has then to be taken into account. Sustainable mobility is a viable option for Germany´s ambitious intention of reducing CO2 emissions.
