Abstract :
Novel tree network protocols based on modifications of the Alberonet protocol permit, in a simple and distributed way, excellent network utilization and, owing to simultaneous packet transmission, a higher throughput. The new protocols are called ST, SW, and SS for different traffic distribution and packet length values. Simulated results were used to compare the performance of a tree network using the new protocols with that of Alberonet. The new protocols showed better performance particularly when the SS protocol (ST and SW combined) with high traffic locality and short packet length duration (high channel bit rate and/or large network size) is used. The good delay-throughput characteristics suggest that tree networks using these protocols perform extremely well in real-time applications
