Abstract
A hybrid approach to nonlinear system theory is proposed. It combines input-output and state-space theories. Within this framework the standard notions of dynamic gain and dynamic incremental gain are examined. The concept of dynamic incremental gain over a set is introduced. A theorem is proven that allows the systematic computation of the set-incremental gain of an operator through nonsmooth optimal control theory. Examples are given that elucidate the above issues.
