Abstract :
The authors have developed a self-commutated static VAr compensator (SVC) to suppress voltage fluctuations in the transmission line of the Tokaido Shinkansen railway. This is the first application of self-commutated SVCs for railway systems. The SVC, which has a system capacity of 48MVA, allows the compensation of three-phase voltage unbalance in addition to power factor improvement. A high power GTO and a new control method using DDC are incorporated into the system. This paper describes the configuration and control system of the SVC and also reports test results obtained under actual load conditions
