Applying the TOC five-step focusing process in surgical process

Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a management philosophy, over the past years, it has been successfully used in a wide variety of the manufacturing sector. Although its application in service organizations is also in development, the TOC applied mainly focus on a certain service organization such as the aviation industry, bank and hotel, other studies in public organizations such as schools, hospitals, government are few. This article based on the review of the application of the TOC five-step focusing process, using the data analysis to identify the system´s constraint and the simulation tools to evaluate the results. Finally, succeed applying the five-step focusing process to surgical process of West China Hospital (WCH), eliminating the constraint in surgical process and shorten the operation time.
