Abstract :
Future high bit-rate communications systems are likely to rely on the multiplexing of many channels, either in the time or frequency domain. We describe a simple and flexible 10 GHz source of transform-limited pulses of selectable duration in the range 20 ps-200 fs suitable for optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) at rates approaching 1 Tbit/s. This source can also be adapted to produce several synchronised 10 GHz channels with selectable pulse durations at different wavelengths suitable for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) applications
