Abstract :
Some functions that may be provided in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch are described, and progress in high-speed electronics technology for circuit and ATM switching is reviewed. High-speed VLSI in silicon and gallium arsenide, which are key technologies for transmission system interfaces and the internal interconnection fabrics of a broadband switch, are examined. The various system and circuit approaches that have been used for ATM switching are discussed.<>
