Abstract :
Rollover events are one of the most crucial hazards for the safety of passengers and the crew riding in a bus. This paper presents a real time rollover propensity evaluation algorithm based on the estimation of road bank to indicate the rollover risk. Since the commonly used lateral acceleration measurements are easily affected by disturbances such as road bank, a road bank estimation method is first introduced. A dynamics rollover propensity index (RPI) generates rollover threshold in terms of lateral acceleration incorporating road bank disturbances. Simulation results verify that the RPI could give appropriate prediction of the vehicle roll stability limit and the model proposed could represent the severity of the rollover threat accurately across all the driving scenarios.
