Abstract
For the foreseeable future air traffic control (ATC) will remain a human centred system. It comprises partly electronic but mostly human components. The controller retains executive control. Consequently the electronic components must be useful and productive in overcoming the operational problems for which the controller remains responsible. `Useful´ and `productive´ are qualitative judgements that can only be made from the perspective of the controller. Excluding the controller from the process of devising and delivering new ATC systems is, therefore, not an option
