Abstract :
The performance of frequency-hopped signals experiencing optimized partial-band noise jamming and nuclear-induced slow fading degradation on the uplink of a satellite communications system is examined. The bit error performance for noncoherently detected differential phase shift keyed (DPSK) signals is compared with that of coherently detected bandwidth efficient modulation signals. The channel is assumed to be Rayleigh and a perfect phase reference is assumed at the receiver for the coherent signal case. It is shown that the noise jammer which maximizes the probability of error is a fullband noise jammer. This result is significant since it means the error performance for these signals in the presence of jamming and fading is the same as the performance of the signals in fading alone
