  • Abstract
EUTELSAT recognised that for the telecommunications applications of the eighties and nineties, a system offering direct user-to-user access would be required. The EUTELSAT Satellite Multiservices System (EUTELSAT SMS) was therefore developed to support a range of digital telecommunications services, including point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and VSAT networks. more than 320 full-time SMS networks are in operation, ranging from simple point-to-point links to fully-interactive hubbed or meshed VSAT networks. Antenna sizes range from 50 cm to more than 10 m, and data rates from 9.6 kbit/s to more than 2 Mbit/s. Applications span a range of business sectors, including videoconferencing, telephony, remote printing, financial data distribution, computer-to-computer interconnection, and digital video/audio distribution
