Abstract :
This paper discusses the fundamentals of signalling scheme design on main line railways and how layouts are signalled. It considers the following areas: • The Science: why are braking distances and headways important? • The History: how has modern practice evolved, what lessons have been learnt? • The Art: what makes a “good” layout? • The People: whom do we need to consult and satisfy?
