Abstract :
Errors-and-erasures decoding of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes with frequency-hop (FH) spread-spectrum modulation is one method of increasing throughput in the presence of partial-band jamming. The errors-and-erasures decoding of RS codes requires reliable erasure decisions from the demodulator. We study the problem of optimally detecting erasures from the received signal and present information-theoretic measures for the detection performance. We use results from multiterminal information theory to develop bounds on optimal detection performance and we compare the performance of a simple “test sequence” to the information-theoretic bounds
