Abstract :
In this paper the performance of the shift keying modulation types ASK, OOK, FSK & PSK in the presence of noise is discussed. Mathematical analysis for the prediction of bit error due to noise is made, a geometric view of signal and noise vectors are considered, which facilitates the evaluation of performance of shift keying modulation types in the presence of noise. Amplitude noise is measured by determining bit error rate (BER). The tests are conducted using channel simulator, which simulates the transmission medium over which digital communication takes place. Practical comparison of external noise effect on shift keying modulation types is also shown in simulation results. The results concluded that OOK modulation offers the advantages of being immune to noise than ASK and is easier to implement at a lower cost and with lower power consumption.
