Abstract
This paper presents an image-based slicing technique for 3D surface reconstruction of a real object. The idea is inspired by surface reconstruction method using a series of parallel contours. Different from the traditional approaches such as CT or laser range scanning for 3D acquisition, the proposed system is relatively low cost and easy to implement. The test object is placed in a cylindrical water container and the level curves are generated by raising the water level. The depth of each level curve can be acquired by calculating the geometry of the recorded image. After obtaining all the depth information of level curves, we then integrate the acquired 3D data to generate the shape surface. Experimental results are shown for both synthetic data and real images.
