Abstract :
This paper assesses the economical benefits of using central electric thermal storage (ETS) systems instead of regular electrical heating systems. Simulations are performed in order to compare the impact of the two heating systems, using as input typical domestic electric consumption profile over a one year period. The results are presented for two typical Quebec´s house. We also consider two types of rates for the electricity cost: regular (constant) rates, and Hydro-Quebec´s pilot project time of use (TOU) rates. The results obtained in this paper are also compared to a previous study done in Nova Scotia. Results show that the use of ETS heating systems can lead to savings of approximately 15% on annual electrical bill. Finally, we evaluate the impact of using ETS on a typical distribution substation load curve for a winter peaking week. With TOU rates control, we show that a penetration of approximately 4% central ETS heating systems can create a new night-time peak that is as important as the morning peak we are trying to mitigate.
