Abstract :
In recent years, there is a strong trend towards generation of wind power across the globe in geographically suitable areas with a more or less stable wind velocity. The wind farms employ Doubly-fed Induction Generator (DFIG) for energy generation. DFIG allow active and reactive power control through a rotor-side converter, while the stator is directly connected to the grid. Rapid and widespread development of wind farms has led to extensive research scope in the areas of efficient production of wind energy and management and operation of energy transfer in wind farms. One such key area is the development of algorithms for optimization of wind energy production and consequently analyzing the economic benefits derived from grid integration of these farms. The paper reports on development of DFIG models for optimization algorithm for wind farms. It also presents two control strategies developed for the active power regulation of DFIG-based wind farms, in order to extract the maximum active power from the wind impinging the blades of the wind turbine.
