Abstract
The ability of a power system to operate economically and reliably in the presence of high wind penetration will ultimately depend on the mix of supporting generation present. This paper demonstrates the importance of generation scheduling using accurate wind power forecasting to reduce fuel costs and reduce environmental emissions. In addition, the balance between spinning and standing sources of reserve is investigated, by considering fast-starting OCGTs, ADGTs, and similar plant. in a system support role, particularly focussing on the challenges of wind power variability.
