Abstract :
The paper reports simulative studies of a double pass erbium doped fiber amplifier pumped bi-directionally by 980nm laser pump using 4:1 splitter for amplification in 100nm optical band. An average gain of 15.5dB in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) system has been obtained with noise figures (N.F) below 4.7dB. An extensive study of the system showed gain and noise figure dependence on doped fiber length, pump powers and signal input levels. Controlling and optimizing these parameters provided a small signal gain spread over 100nm. Such a configuration can be a cost effective alternative of today´s optical networks for cable television (CATV) operation.
