Abstract :
This paper presents a study of the variability of future planned wind and marine power output in the UK by analysing historic resource data and developing power output time series for each resource individually and in combination. For wind and wave power the hourly power outputs were calculated using power curves and matrices, while for tidal power, annual generation and installed capacities were taken from previous studies and only the relative shapes of the time series were calculated. The findings in this paper suggest a simple relationship between installed capacities of the wind and marine renewable plant for minimal variability. Finally, the impacts of allowing renewable generation to be spilled or used to charge electrical vehicles off-peak in a ´smart grid´ scenario are assessed.
