  • Abstract
This paper examines the operation of a PCS band smart receiving antenna in a multipath environment. The main goals are to demonstrate that a smart antenna works in a multipath environment and to present results from a hardware implementation. The mathematics and the measurements on a multi-port smart antenna showed that a smart receiver is achievable in a multipath environment. The hardware and data processing are described. Measured in-building results are presented. The experimental system consists of four transmitters and a twelve port receiving antenna. The smart receiving antenna has four outputs that are obtained by applying adaptively controlled complex gains to each of the received signals which are then summed. The complex gains are adjusted to enhance the desired signal while suppressing the other three signals. The system performance is described in terms of training time and minimum error.
