Abstract
Liver failure is a serious disease which mortality rate is up to 70%. During the past decades, several attempts have been made to develop bioartificial liver systems (BAL) capable of providing temporary hepatic support to patients with liver failure. The bio-reactor is the core of the bioartificial liver system, which exists within the complex fluid dynamics problems. In recent years, with the rapid development of computer technology, computer-based simulation of fluid dynamics of the bioartificial liver has been developed rapidly and achieved gratifying achievements, which provide a good condition to further optimize the bioartificial liver reactor. In this article, important aspects of the application of computational simulation technology in bioreactor design are summarized and an overview of the critical issues in the development of bioartificial liver devices is discussed.
