Abstract
An information-theoretic approach to the design and analysis of reduced-complexity receivers for intersymbol interference (ISI) channels is proposed. The approach is based on achievable rates (in the Shannon sense), as opposed to the mean squared-error criterion. With the new design criterion channel truncation is no longer optimal
