Abstract :
Cast thin amorphous metal was processed in groups for stacked core applications. Single-phase corelets assembled with pressure-annealed cast thin ribbons magnetically performed 16% to 28% better than single-phase corelets assembled with POWERCORE strips at 1.4 T. Pressure annealing significantly improved the surface profiles of cast thin ribbon laminations. All dimples, ripples, surface defects, etc. disappeared. It is noted that the use of cast thin ribbon in stacked cores requires more labor involvement than the use of POWERCORE strips. Unless low-cost automated lamination processing is developed, it will be economically difficult to justify the use of cast thin ribbon over POWERCORE strips
