Abstract :
The selection of overhead transmission and distribution line conductors and conductor tension have a direct impact on the building cost, electric losses and reliability of the line. As a result of the research carried out by The National Network Unit of the Israel Electric Corp., a new company standard was developed to regulate strength and tension of the overhead conductors. This standard is adapted to Israeli terrain and weather conditions, based on line operation experience. The permissible conductor tension increased; the conductor tension with no wind is limited in terms of tension-to-weight ratio, preventing damage resulting from aeolian vibrations. The new standard enables new approaches to power transmission and distribution line design, re-conductoring and uprating. Wide use of all aluminum conductors is enabled, both in new and in existing lines, saving power losses. Lighter OPGW conductors can be installed on old lines not overloading the pole heads. ACSS is considered as a line uprating option. On the other hand, dangerous overtension of especially strong conductors is prevented
