  • Abstract
Summary form only given. Relativistic electron beam dynamics in gyrotron devices is currently under investigation. Numerical comparisons to previous analytic solutions to relativistic electron dynamics in a cusped magnetic field are presented; the equations of motion of relativistic electrons in spatially varying magnetic fields are derived for numerical analysis. Single particle motion through a magnetic cusp is compared numerically and analytically. Coherent off centering of annular beams going through a cusp is observed. The numerical analysis is carried further to obtain estimates for relativistic electron beam alpha (Vperp/Vparallel) and radius measurements. The numerical results for a small orbit gyrotron in a spatially varying magnetic field are compared with measurements using the MELBA machine at parameters: 0.75 MV, 1-10 kA, and /spl tau/=0.5-1.0 /spl mu/s.
