Abstract
Design considerations and a generic architecture for an access controller used in a survivable planar internetwork (SPIN) are presented. The SPIN interconnects local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and extended area satellite networks by organizing them into various connectivity planes using multiple transmission media. The issues related to internetworking of LANs and WANs are discussed with examples of T1 and X.25 networks. An 80486-based system design is described with the help of a flow diagram. Performance considerations such as access delays and alarm responses are included
