Abstract :
Formulas and numerical results are obtained for the channel capacity and cutoff rate of a two-dimension Gaussian channel with signals uniformly distributed on a circle. This signal distribution is the limiting case of M-ary phase-shift keying (PSK) for large alphabet size. The capacity expression involves an integral that is evaluated numerically, but the cutoff rate is expressed in closed form. Simple high signal-to-noise ratio approximations for both formulas are presented. The results are compared with M-ary PSK for various alphabet sizes, as well as with other two-dimensional continuous signal distribution
