Pulse loads like solid state pulse modulators often generate short pulses with a high peak power which exceeds the average power 100 to 1000 times depending on the pulse repetition rate. There, the peak power usually is drawn from an energy buffer like a capacitor bank. During the pulse the energy buffer is discharged and has to be recharged between the pulses by a power supply, which is commonly connected to the mains.
