Abstract :
The propagation of equally and unequally spaced WDM optical signals through a cascade of praseodymium-doped fibre amplifiers and conventional single mode fibres with zero chromatic dispersion at 1300 nm is numerically analysed. We show that a proper choice of the amplifier characteristics, span length and channel allocation, combined with the use of gain equalising and grating filters, allows to maximize the transmission distance with a substantial reduction of gain peaking and four-wave mixing crosstalk
