  • Abstract
A set of two-level linear-modulation techniques suitable for personal communications is presented. The techniques cover a broad range of possible system requirements, including compatibility with limiter-discriminator or coherent detection. It is shown that, through proper choice of filter parameters, linear modulations can be designed to achieve full compatibility with standard receiver architectures, but with better overall performance than possible with constant-envelope techniques. The schemes are fully characterized and shown to yield excellent spectral characteristics and cochannel performance, while displaying only small envelope fluctuations. System applications are discussed in order to estimate the capacity improvements that may be obtained through the use of these techniques. It is concluded that linear modulation techniques can offer the system designer significant capacity improvements provided that a small envelope fluctuation can be tolerated
