Abstract
Large systems can only be built based on a sound system architecture. We present experiences gained within Philips Kommunikations Industrie (PKI), where architectural design in hardware and software has been the centre of the development of telecommunication infrastructure systems. Principles for architectural design and their integration with the development process and the organization are explained.
