Abstract :
This paper discusses the role of dedicated lanes in the automated highway system (AHS). Dedicated lanes are defined and compared with mixed traffic lanes. Discussion of the safety of dedicated lanes includes a look at obstacles in the right-of-way. Additional topics discussed in this article include: increased throughput on dedicated lanes, interchange issues, simulations findings, the affect of dedicated lanes on existing arterials, as well as the issues of cost, deployment, and electronic systems
