Abstract
In this paper, an optical fiber index sensor based on the measurement of the return loss resulted from the interface between a fiber sensing head and the material under testing is investigated. An analytical equation is derived, and the measurement accuracy is theoretical addressed. The experimental data agree with the theoretical results. The sensor is of the advantages of portability, remote and real time monitoring capability, simple configuration, low cost, high precise, and ease operation. It can be applied to the measurement of refractive indices of all kinds of materials as well as index distribution
