Abstract :
In this paper, the Smith-predictor is used to regulate the liquid temperature for a precision machine. It is chosen because of its delay-free characteristic and suitability for regulating systems with excessively long time delay. Detailed analyses of system performance through parametric and temporal mismatch are investigated and accompanied with closed form solutions. Based on the derived results, the performance and stability characteristics of the predictor type control system are examined under a broader point of view. Some interesting results are found that system performance can be improved by introducing intentional mismatches, and the corresponding optimal tunings are determined based on the value of a normalized parameter. The theoretical results are verified by experimental observations, and good consistency has been found between the two approaches
