Abstract :
Characteristics of wavelength-scale photonic crystal cavity modes are controlled by utilizing the spatial symmetry. A robust photonic crystal single-cell structure supporting only one resonant lasing mode is proposed and demonstrated, based on the mirror symmetry selection rule. In addition, the directional vertical beaming is achieved through the loss engineering based on the symmetry perturbation, confirming over 70% photon collection within 30 degrees
