Abstract
The design and operation of manufacturing systems are of great economic importance. In spite of the considerable literature and long history of manufacturing, much research remains to be done. This paper combines earlier work on the hedging point method for scheduling and the decomposition method for performance prediction and design to propose a unified approach for design and operation. It includes algorithms for selecting buffer sizes and policy parameters
