Abstract :
The Texas Tech Department of Computer Science has created a introductory course for its computer science majors. This course has a purpose similar to the introductory courses in traditional engineering programs. Unlike previous computing courses, it takes a “breadth-first” approach rather than teach only programming, and has structured, “closed” laboratory sessions on a weekly basis. This course has significantly increased both the retention and passing rates for the next computer course (which still emphasizes programming), and the computer science graduation rates
