Abstract
This paper describes an integrated design approach of hybrid compensation systems, including passive filters and thyristor-switched capacitors and inductors. The approach, which is valid even for nonlinear and unbalanced loads fed by unsymmetrical and distorted supply voltages, relies on a load identification method by means of parallel passive impedances. Applying the same method also to passive resonant filters, design criteria of such filters can be enveloped in the comprehensive load compensator design, which takes into account the supply characteristics too. In order to show the potentialities of the method, the case of an AC arc furnace compensator is considered
