Abstract :
Polycarbonate is a lightweight transparent polymer which used in many applications as armour. Polycarbonate has a very high yield strain and ductility, which enables it to have a good resistance against perforation. The present paper deals with a simulation-based study of impact of projectiles on polycarbonate material plate as a target using ANSYS AOTUDYN by modeling plates and projectiles with 2D solid elements. A finite element method was used for studying the polycarbonate behavior with different thicknesses under impact loading with ballistic velocity by two types of projectiles. Different mechanisms of deformation and subsequent fracture of the plate are observed. They are: elastic dishing, deep penetration, cone and plugging.
