Abstract :
Significant improvements in head-end gauge, in-body gauge, finishing temperature and coiling temperature performance were achieved by implementing a finishing mill setup model and new automatic gauge control, along with a coiling temperature control model. Supporting the models and gauge control were a new Level 1.5 computer system with interfacing to the existing plant Level 2 system, a Level 1 control system for the finishing mill and runout table sprays, static armature supplies for the finishing mill screwdowns and interstand loopers, and field supplies for the common bus generators and main drive motors. The entire system, including a new finishing mill pulpit with the associated operator desks, was installed and commissioned without the benefit of extended down time or outages, utilizing the design for startup (DFSU) process
