Abstract :
Highlights the possibilities offered by the intelligent network (IN) technology for countries which require a rapid expansion of facilities in quality and quantity over the coming decade. A recent exercise revealed that just by using new transmission technologies like optical fibers, digital switches and cross connects and reorganising the switching hierarchy, the investment per line could be brought down by as much as 50%. Further savings (possibly 25%) are expected by employing IN concepts that would provide not only newer facilities but also result in optimum sharing of various resources. This becomes even more apparent when there are demands for several independent networks each of which is subcritical and costly due to the severe underutilization of resources. An IN that acts like a universal or national backbone network supporting a number of smaller (virtual) networks would result in appreciable efficiency and economy
