Computer communication: Benefits, options, pitfalls

The author addresses the increased use of computer/electronic communication and its potential impact on the education system. Specifically, three areas of electronic communication are examined: electronic mail (email), electronic posting services such as bulletin boards, and real-time, interactive `classroom´ discussions. Some of the issues facing students and faculty as they bring these communication technologies into their specific learning environments are discussed. Results achieved using these systems on campus in introductory level through graduate level electrical engineering courses are presented. Potential applications for these communication services in the distant learning environment are also presented
