Abstract :
Sequential coding of correlated sources (X1,X2 ) can be viewed as a generalization of the successive refinement problem. The first stage involves the description of a source X1 at distortion level D1. Upon receiving this information, the receiver may be interested in a version of a correlated source X2 as opposed to being interested in a refined version of X1. A video source can be modeled as a sequence of frames each of which consists of a two-dimensional array of pixels. The pixels in each frame of the video scanned in a particular order can be treated as a source (in an information-theoretic sense) and a sequence of frames would correspond to a sequence of correlated sources. With this perspective the video compression task may be viewed as sequential coding of correlated sources
