Abstract
Thiol-functionalized silica was successfully synthesized by cheaper chloropropyl trichlorosilane and NaHS instead of expensive 3-Mercaptopropyltriethoxysilylane agent. The silica-SH and its precursor were characterized by BET, FT-IR, TOC and element analysis. Surface coverage density of silica-chloropropyl and silica-SH was 2.5mmol/g and 1.56mmol/g, respectively. The silica-SH was used as sorbent to fix heavy metal ions--Hg(II), and showed great potential for fixation of Hg (II) from water, the saturation adsorption capacity for Hg(II) reached as high as 0.235mmol/g.
