Author_Institution :
Johns Hopkins Univ., Baltimore, MD, USA
Abstract :
The author describes the contents of a textbook for a popular course that has been taught for several years at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). The text that used Twists and Turns and Tangles in Math and Physics, avoids simply teaching 7th or 8th grade math or physics to 6th grade students. It exposes the students to a variety of items in order first to develop mental acuity and then to develop scientific reasoning capabilities. This latter purpose is achieved by including a wide variety of scientific problems in order to expose the students to a variety of ways of viewing problems and attacking them
