Abstract :
Current compiler technology is examined with respect to choices or trends in supercomputer design. The basic techniques are extensions of strategies for vector machines, but they have limited effectiveness in a parallel environment. Technical reasons for this are presented. The nature of automatic and nonautomatic code optimization is explored
